An excellent education system is essential for a good workforce and a
productive society. Delegates Boteler and Cluster believe that schools should
emphasize basic, strong curriculum. They have worked to increase state
assistance for Baltimore County’s public schools, which are among the oldest
schools in the state. Despite the state’s budget crisis, Governor Ehrlich and
the General Assembly have sharply increased funding for public school
construction. In the 2005 legislative session, the Baltimore County delegation
secured more than $25 million to renovate our schools.
In addition to renovation money, Delegates Boteler and Cluster strongly support
the construction of a new high school to reduce overcrowding in northeastern
Baltimore County. In 2004, they successfully lobbied Governor Ehrlich to appoint
School Board members more sympathetic to this issue.
In 2005, some legislators proposed changing the law so that the State Senate
would approve members of Baltimore County’s School Board. Delegates Boteler and
Cluster helped block this bad bill, which would have allowed Senators from
places like Montgomery County and the Eastern Shore to select Baltimore County’s
local School Board.
